What is Google for Jobs and what is it not?

Google for Jobs is a feature within Google Search that searches for job advertisements. It searches job boards and Career pages of websites for job offers and presents them directly in the Google search results. Users can then clearly sort the offers using the Google for Jobs functions and go to the relevant page if they are interested.

Google for Jobs is therefore NOT a job portal where you can publish job advertisements (for a fee). Rather, the feature bundles offers from various online sources. It offers the user the opportunity to find out about the results of their job search without having to access and search through all the individual pages separately.

Since Google for Jobs is not a classic job board, how do recruiters and HR staff get their job advertisements listed there?

With these SEO measures, job advertisements land in Google's job box

In order to appear on Google for Jobs, the page with the job advertisement must first be indexed by the search engine and secondly be recognized as a job advertisement. Various measures must be taken for this to happen.

    1. Make job advertisement publicly available as an HTML page

The job offer must be crawlable by Google on the Internet via an HTML website. It must not be embedded as a PDF download or image. The robots.txt or meta tags must not block the page.

    2. Assign a unique URL to each job offer

Each job advertisement must be accessible via its own link. A single subpage containing several job advertisements will not end up in the search engine job box. The URL should be meaningful - as opposed to cryptic links that are often automatically generated by the CMS.

    3. Optimize content

Content plays an important role in SEO, including the Google for Jobs ranking. Meaningful titles are just as important as appropriate keywords and proper formatting of the job advertisement.

    4. Store schema data

Google for Jobs works with structured data of the type JobPosting from Schema.org. These are semantic hints to the Google bots about what the page is about. The schema attributes can be used with tools such as the Schema Markup Generator created and then stored in the HTML source code of the respective job offer page.

Whether the structured data has been inserted correctly can be checked using Google's Structured Data Tool Check free of charge.

    5. Accelerate indexing

In order for indexing to start, the page with the job offer must be found. To speed up this process, you can, for example, set links from pages that are already indexed to the job advertisement URL. It is also advisable to "retrieve as Google" the new subpage using the Google Search Console.

Conclusion: Achieve recruiting success with Google for Jobs

If you want to rank with your job advertisements on Google for Jobs, you cannot avoid SEO optimization of your career page or the individual subpages. For recruiters, it can be worthwhile to deal with this topic: Google's job feature has a huge reach and makes it possible to attract a lot of attention to a job offer free of charge.
