TikTok is one of the most popular social media channels, alongside Instagram, Twitter, and others. Users upload videos to the portal, which is also available as a mobile app. The short clips often consist of dance routines or lip syncing. The social network is therefore primarily used for entertainment.
With TikTok Resumes, however, the app should also be interesting for the world of work. The offer was launched in the USA in summer 2021. TikTok users can save a resume as a video in their profile. A dedicated page (now offline) gave tips on what the ideal TikTok resume looks like.
TikTok resumes are short videos in which candidates can introduce themselves in a self-presentation clip and attract recruiters' attention. Video applications can be made directly for a specific job via job advertisements on TikTok Jobs - the TikTok resume link can be entered in the application form alongside the name and email address.
The TikTok Resumes pilot project only ran for a very short time in the USA. How it will continue and whether it will become a long-term offering - also in other countries such as Germany - is currently unknown.
However, if TikTok Resumes return and are rolled out here too, it could hit the nerve of the times. After all, video applications are becoming increasingly popular and Generation Z in particular is very familiar with self-presentation via video.
Would the trend also appeal to recruiters? There are different opinions on the topic of video applications. Some are in favor of it because it optimizes the candidate experience and avoids time-consuming written application processes. Other HR professionals, however, complain that it is more difficult to capture applicant information from videos and that introverted talents would not make use of this option.
The issue of data protection on TikTok is also hotly debated; video applications and the associated collection of personal data would certainly fuel the controversy.
